Understanding Evil Altars

Altars serve two main functions.
1. An altar is a place of sacrifice to the god or gods of your covenant, including territorial spirits.
2. An altar is a place of contact with the spirit world. It is a place of communication with either angels or evil spirits (Genesis 28:12).
An altar is a place of servicing covenants.
A functioning altar activates ancestral covenants and stirs up the operation of community or territorial spirits. An altar is also a place of invocation, where you can call your god into manifestation. God and evil spirits both respond to altars very quickly. In Genesis 8:20-21, we see God respond favorably to the altar Noah built to Him after the flood.
Genesis 28:20-22 (ESV)
Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, so that I come again to my father's house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God, and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God's house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.
Balaam is another example. He knew that before he could curse Israel, he had to build altars. He instructed Balak to build seven altars and to prepare seven bulls and seven rams for sacrifice (Numbers 23:1 to 3, 23:27-30). Even while attempting to invoke the spirit of witchcraft, Balaam knew he could not operate without altars. God stopped him.
Numbers 23:1-3 (ESV)
And Balaam said to Balak, "Build for me here seven altars, and prepare for me here seven bulls and seven rams." Balak did as Balaam had said. And Balak and Balaam offered on each altar a bull and a ram. And Balaam said to Balak, "Stand beside your burnt offering, and I will go. Perhaps the LORD will come to meet me, and whatever he shows me I will tell you." And he went to a bare height.
Numbers 23:27-30 (ESV)
And Balak said to Balaam, "Come now, I will take you to another place. Perhaps it will please God that you may curse them for me from there." So Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, which overlooks the desert. And Balaam said to Balak, "Build for me here seven altars and prepare for me here seven bulls and seven rams." And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
When you build an altar on a portion of land, you are inadvertently drawing that land into a covenant with the god you are serving. Lands and waters with altars and high places on them are covenanted lands. Apostles, pastors, prophets, and intercessors are often called to labor against evil altars. With the anointing, sufficient knowledge, and emotional intelligence, permanent deliverance can be ministered to many oppressed communities, opening the land and its people to development and the gospel.
Three Types of Altars
Territorial: Altars erected mainly on land, in houses, forests, crossroads, markets, and on mountainsides and mountaintops.
Marine: Altars placed within bodies of water such as oceans, streams, wells, lakes, and rivers. These are a haven for marine spirits that afflict many marine and riverside communities. Pharaoh of Egypt drew much of his satanic power from the waters (Exodus 7:14 to 15, 8:20).
Astral: Spiritual altars placed in heavenly bodies such as the sun, moon, and stars through secret satanic words, witchcraft, sorcery, and enchantments. Many rulers draw their power from these altars, and many cannot do without the services of stargazers (Daniel 2:2).
Daniel 2:2 (ESV)
Then the king commanded that the magicians, the enchanters, the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans be summoned to tell the king his dreams. So they came in and stood before the king.
Identifying Altars in Your Life
A key way to identify which altars may be at work in your bloodline or personal life is to look for the same demonic cycle repeating itself. Pay attention to cycles in your family line and in your own life.
For example, you were close to finishing your undergraduate degree, but something happened that forced you to take time out, and you never finished. Your mother was also about to finish her degree but had to take time out, and the same happened to your grandmother. This is an example of an altar of delay and stagnation at work in a bloodline.
These altars can be broken, and new altars can be erected through Jesus Christ. Below is a deliverance prayer to break the power of evil altars.
